Long haul holidays

Article Abstract:

Long haul destinations, those outside Europe and the Mediterranean area, are predicted to account for 17% of holidays taken abroad by UK holidaymakers in 1997, rising to 20% by 2000. The long haul sector is vulnerable to economic conditions, as long haul holidays can never be particularly inexpensive. However, it is clear that many holidaymakers are prepared to make sacrifices in order to be able to travel to a long haul destination. Package holidays account for a growing proportion of long haul holidays, but there is also a steady rise in independent travel.

Special interest holidays

Article Abstract:

It is estimated that Britons took 7.9 million special interest holidays in 1998, spending a total of around 2,150 million pounds sterling. Domestic holidays accounted for 6.7 million of the special interest holidays sold in 1998. The special interest holiday sector has not expanded significantly over recent years, but a number of factors could have a positive impact. These include the trend towards taking more than one holiday a year and the fact that there are now more early retired and young people in the population.
