Article Abstract:

Italy is seeking to encourage trade with Asia. Lamberto Dini, Italy's foreign minister, is traveling to Hong Kong, China and South Korea with key Italian business leaders. Italian exports to Asia increased by 40% to $40 billion in 1995. There is direct competition between Asia and southern Europe in a number of areas such as textiles and footwear, but Dini argues that Italy can offer benefits such as small and medium firms that can provide a role model. He also stresses that Italy does not support direct links between labor standards and trade though labor factors have to be borne in mind when trade barriers are considered.

China's WTO accession

Article Abstract:

China has been negotiating its entry into the World Trade Organization since 1988. The central issue of debate concerns the economic status of China. China perceives itself to be a developing nation but the US argues that it is an industrial nation. China needs to become more integrated into the global economy but it is right to be careful concerning conditions of entry. Chinese economic growth of the late 1990s does not give it the economic power some analysts perceive. The combined output of all its state-owned firms is less than the combined output of the three largest US companies.

Nervous neighbours

Article Abstract:

India is working with China to improve trade links in Asia but is increasingly nervous about China's expanding economic and political strength. Indians remember the time in 1962 when China betrayed its trust by forcibly taking Indian land in the Himalayas. China's economic growth rate has increased at twice the speed of India's in the last ten years. Its significant military presence in the area concerns Indians.
