Finance on the loose

Article Abstract:

Financial liberalization involves more than simply ending capital controls, which may not be the most important facet of liberalization. Government intervention in financial markets may stunt the growth of the financial sector. Liberalization involves a range of actions including the end of credit controls, deregulation of rates of interest, greater autonomy for banks, and private ownership for banks. Markets tend to allocate investment more efficiently after liberalization, but it is unclear whether liberalization helps to boost economic growth.

Much indebted to EU

Article Abstract:

The new European currency, the euro, has promoted the integration of European financial markets, especially in some areas, such as the market for corporate bonds. The euro has bcome as popular a currency as the US dollar for issuing corporate bonds. Investors face a drop in new government bonds, so demand for corporate bonds in euros is strong. There are still obstacles to integration, such as regulations and national pride. Tax and regulatory regimes differ across Europe, yet progress is being made.
