Stranger on the shore

Article Abstract:

New South Korean President Kim Dae Jung has made attempts to improve his country's relations with North Korea. However, North Korea has not reacted positively, and South Korea has become concerned about North Korean armed spying missions. It now plans to request the United Nations Security Council to place North Korea under pressure to stop spying. However, senior security adviser Lim Dong Won acknowledges that the South Korean government still needs to be flexible in its approach to North Korea.

Gunboat diplomacy

Article Abstract:

A North Korean boat has been destroyed by South Korea after an exchange of fire which is seen as the most serious since the armistice in 1953. This clash could be a warning from North Korea to the US and South Korea, in a similar way to the warning implied in a previous test-firing of a missile over Japan. South Korea is continuing with its 'sunshine policy' geared to improving relations with North Korea. Meanwhile, tourist trips are being organized to North Korea from South Korea by Hyundai.
