Look before you leap

Article Abstract:

The use of traditional lime mortars became less popular in the 20th century as the construction industry required quicker-setting mortar for their higher-stressed bricks. But lime mortars can be used successfully in modern buildings and is used in renovation work on old buildings. There are two types of lime mortars, one made with hydraulic lime and the other with hydrated lime. Builders should be aware not all lime mortars have been tested to modern day standards. Lime mortars increase bonding and allow for some movement in the masonry.
