M and A milestone: $101 billion deal for ABN Amro: group set to dismember 183-year-old bank; will buyers regret it?

Article Abstract:

A consortium headed by Royal Bank of Scotland PLC is expected to obtain approval from shareholders of Dutch bank ABN AMRO Holding N.V. to buy ABN AMRO for $101 bil. The bank will be split three ways between RBS and the two other consortium participants, Spain's Banco Santander S.A. and Belgian-Dutch bank Fortis N.V. A lower bid from Britain's Barclays PLC expired on Oct. 4, 2007.

UBS to report big loss tied to credit woes

Article Abstract:

Third-quarter losses for Swiss bank UBS AG are expected to range between 600 to 700 mil Swiss francs, due primarily to securities connected to the subprime credit problems in the US. The bank is anticipating a write-down of as much as $3.41 bil, or 4 bil Swiss francs. For the same quarter in 2006, UBS had a net profit of 2.2 bil Swiss francs.
