MOROCCO: FOOD TRADE EXCHANGES

Article Abstract:

France is Morocco's principal supplier for food products, representing more than half of the European Union's exports to this country, particularly for cereals, with exports of more than FFr 850mn in 1999, and oils and fats. For about the past three years, Morocco has been importing about 500,000 tonnes of sugar per year from Brazil in order to meet the demand of the domestic market, which is up sharply. Morocco produces only about 500,000 tonnes of sugar per year, about half of the domestic demand. France is also one of Morocco's principal suppliers for dairy products, particularly for skim dry milk and butter, but France is facing increasing competition from the Netherlands on these two segments. France is Morocco's principal client for food products, with 25% of Morocco's total sales, representing FFr 2.679mn in 1998 and FFr 2.975 in 1999.

FRANCE/SPAIN: FOODSTUFFS EXCHANGES

Article Abstract:

Franco-Spanish foodstuffs trading is estimated at around FFr 17.5bn, in one sense or another. However, Spanish exports are growing quicker than French exports, notably since 1993, with the creation of the single market. In fact, France has been in deficit for two years in foodstuffs trading with Spain. This deficit grew to FFr 315mn in 1999, compared to FFr 200mn in 1998. Several factors play in Spain's favour; the qualitative and quantitative development in production; lower prices resulting from lower production costs to that of France and commitments of Spanish farmers in the quality certification process.
