Malaysian conglomerate Malayan United Industries Bhd. (MUI) is bucking the trend exhibited by Asian conglomerates of scaling down on investments, as shown by its large investment in London-based Laura Ashley Holdings PLC. MUI is embarking on its global investment strategy to seek growth in the international market given the slow growth in both the regional and domestic markets brought about by the Asian currency crisis. Since the start of MUI's international expansion, the conglomerate has bought interests which resulted in a diversified portfolio, including investments in Latin Communications Group Inc in the US, hotels in Australia, a travel agency in Hong Kong and a stake in a residential property development in China.

Malaysian plantation firms are sturdy in market storms

Economic experts believe that Malaysia's plantation companies will remain virtually unaffected by the Southeast Asian financial crisis. One of the factors that makes these companies stable amidst the recent currency turmoil is the fact that palm oil and other related products are sold in US dollars. This means that even if the ringgit depreciates, plantations would continue to profit since their stocks are translated in US dollars. These companies are further expected to perform robustly in 1998, when shortage of palm oil would allow them to increase the prices of products.
