Macau has had a different relationship with China than has Hong Kong, and there will be a different impact from the handover of Macau to China by Portugal in Dec 1999, compared to the british handowver of Hong Kong. China tolerated Portugal more than it did Britain. Macau was a major trading post for Portuguese merchants who became involved in regional trade. Macau has been affected by Portugal's Catholic faith, while Hong Kong was ruled by the Protestant British. A gambling monopoly accounts for over half government revenue.
