Material effect: for Caterpillar, commodity boom creates a bind

Article Abstract:

With the demand for raw materials high and commodity prices continuing to rise , mining companies are requiring more equipment and machinery to meet the demand for greater production. In turn, construction and mining equipment makers such as Caterpillar Inc. are experiencing greater demand for their products. The effort of equipment manufacturer s to meet demand at the same time that they are faced with the high cost of production materials themselves, is discussed.

Highly skilled factory workers such as Richard Schrader, a Swiss-style machinist at Marox Corp., are currently scarce in the U.S. Large manufacturers have let apprenticeship programs slide, while the decreasing pay differential between the U.S. and Europe has resulted in a drop in the amount of skilled immigrant labor entering the U.S.

Severstal is to buy Maryland steel plant
