Transmetamorphosis

Article Abstract:

Transmeta has developed a new microchip that consumes less power. The chip uses 'code morphing' software that rests between an X86 program and the chip, making the program act as though it were running on a standard processor that is X86 compatible. The chip can hold statistics on program parts that are most frequently executed. Transmeta has focused on the market for portable computer chip, and has yet to compete with Intel in the market for chips for desktop computers.

Meta-Moore-phosis: chip technology

Article Abstract:

Both Intel and IBM have announced intriguing microprocessor chip developments. Intel is developing a chip that will store twice as much information with the same components, while IBM is taking advantage of copper's greater conductivity by developing a copper chip.

A tall story

Article Abstract:

A new transistor has been developed by Bell Labs which uses vertical current flow which gives a higher speed and smaller size, and allows greater precision in controlling the main dimensions involved in transistors. Vertical transistor layers are constructed onto flat wafers instead of etched from them, so multi-storey semiconductors could be developed. There are claims that vertical transistors could take over from conventional transistors.
