Mini submarines and special forces pose maximum threat

Article Abstract:

Mini- and midget submarine and swimmer delivery vehicle's (SDV's) fast expanding technology has greatly increased their threat potential especially to possible crisis regions such as the Persian Gulf and the Korean Peninsula. The developments are also making countermeasures for covert surveillance or insertion team raids more difficult. Worldwide naval staffs and military headquarters were re-alerted of this after the Sep. 17, 1996 Sang-O incident, when the advanced North Korean mini-submarine was ran aground after spending over three days inside South Korean coastal waters.

Gripen recce and weapon buys accelerated

Article Abstract:

The Swedish Air Force plans to immediately procure reconnaissance pods, laser-guided bombs and laser targeting and night navigation pods for installation on its fleet of JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft. The service will purchase about 10 reconnaissance pods to be able to meet the Swedish government's instruction to have a reconnaissance squadron ready by the end of 2000. The requirement for laser-guided bombs coupled with a FLIR/laser designating pod is likely to be awarded to the Rafael/Northrop Grumman team.
