Misunderstood youth: campaign issues: crime

Article Abstract:

Bob Dole proposes that tougher sentences and trying youthful offenders as adults will curb juvenile crime. Experiments by states show that tougher penalties generally turn youths into tougher criminals. Preventative efforts that keep children in school and keep them occupied after school are more effective.

Republican candidate Bob Dole strongly supports school voucher programs, in which public funds are given to parents to defray the cost of their children's private school tuition. The school choice issue is one of the few in which a clear difference exists between Dole's policy and Pres Clinton's.

Dole has declared his tolerance for abortion, which was difficult in light of pressure from conservatives. But the move is politically wise for Dole, as most Americans tolerate abortion. The Republican Party will suffer if its abortion platform is dominated by extremists.
