Modern survivor

Article Abstract:

Architecture must address the needs of a brief, rather than making arbitrary statements, according to architect Jim Cadbury-Brown. He has been involved with architectural developments in the UK for many years, having joined the Architectural Association in 1930 at the age of 17. He had links with innovative architects, but never felt the need to break away from tradition. He has always focused on comfortable modern architecture which fits in well with its surroundings.

Architecture in earnest

Article Abstract:

The main influences on architects Gregory Penoyre and Sunand Prasad, who founded Penoyre and Prasad in 1987, are Corbusier, Aalto, Lubetkin, Murcutt and Herzberger. The two men are often seen as 'social' architects, as their practice has until recently been involved mostly with low-cost housing and healthcare buildings. They certainly hold strong social and political views, and seek to become involved in projects which have a very clear purpose.

Pragmatic idealist: Kenneth Frampton sees the 'constructional art' of architecture as a defence against the excesses of populism

Article Abstract:

Kenneth Frampton holds the Ware chair in architecture at New York City's Columbia University. He is critical of many aspects of current American architecture and concerned by the degree to which Britain has embraced these aspects. He believes that the Canary Wharf development in Docklands is a monument to Thatcherism, and he feels that many architects favour an arbitrary self-expression instead of the true concerns of architecture.
