More electronics imported by Japan are made in China

Article Abstract:

Electronics imports to Japan totaled 6.5 trillion yen in 2000 with 5.38 trillion yen coming from Asian countries, including 14.2% from China, up from 2.4% in 1990. Though Japanese subsidiaries taking advantage of lower labor costs in China account for many of these imports, analysts believe Chinese electronics exports will ultimately hurt Japanese manufacturers, for Chinese electronics are less expensive, and Chinese-owned manufacturers are significantly increasing their shares in other Asian markets.

Increase in auto-parts sourcing benefits mostly Thailand

Article Abstract:

Numerous Japanese auto parts manufacturers are boosting imports from their affiliates in Southeast Asia to help compensate for sharp decreases in demand for those countries. However, so far, Thailand may be the sole major beneficiary. Japan's imports of auto parts from Thailand nearly increased twofold to $14.5 bil yen in the initial seven months of 1998 from 7.2 bil yen in 1997. Imports from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines have remained nearly unchanged or even dropped.

Currency effect on output

Article Abstract:

Asia's rapidly depreciating currencies are making China-made products less competitive, according to Yukio Shotoku, executive director in charge of China operations at Matsushita Eletric Industrial Co. He adds that Japanese firms in China would not benefit from any fall of the yuan, in fact, a decline would hamper production since it would boost the costs of components that Japanese firms import.
