Mormon spearhead

Article Abstract:

Wordperfect Corp, which sold $178 million of software to over 20 countries in 1988, is now making a concerted effort to enter the European word processing market. The company already controls 60% of the US market. Wordperfect believes much of its success is due to: the way it treats its programmers; the customer service it provides; and the company's Mormon background. In its efforts to win over the Europe market, Wordperfect has built a $4 million investment center in the Netherlands, but experts believe that the company will have to confront several challenges to its goals, such as the demand for higher wages in Europe and the difficulty the company has had in maintaining customer support phone lines.

Colliding with the Americans

Article Abstract:

The opening of the European Particle Physics Laboratory's Large Electron Positron collider (LEP) in the Jura mountains between Geneva, Switzerland and the French border has helped Europe regain leadership in the field of particle physics from the US. All EC countries, except for Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, and Sweden, took part in the project, which cost $660 million and took six years to complete. Particle physics research has a number of useful technological applications, and the LEP should enhance European competitiveness in the fields of medicine and the production of semiconductors and computer chips.
