Motorola will join Cisco to purchase Bosch unit

Article Abstract:

California-based Cisco Systems Inc. has joined with Illinois-based Motorola Inc. to jointly acquire Bosch Telecom Inc. for undisclosed terms. SpectraPoint Wireless, a new company to be formed by Motorola and Cisco, will acquire Robert Bosch GMBH's Texas unit. Industry analysts have said that the new company will be a leader in the development of local multipoint distribution services (LMDS) technology. LMDS is attracting the interest of major telecom firms because it offers high-speed Internet access.

Philips offers $17 per share for VLSI

Article Abstract:

Royal Philips Electronics NV began a full-fledged proxy effort to acquire VLSI Technology Inc. following the US firm's unwillingness to engage in formal talks. Philips announced that it was directly making VLSI shareholders a $17 per share offer. This gives VLSI a value of $777 million. Philips stated that it would prefer if VLSI would engage in negotiations instead. VLSI is a computer chip maker.

Emerson to buy Ericsson unit for $725 million
