NFCSF, ISMA DEMAND 150% IMPORT DUTY

Article Abstract:

National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited (NFCSF) and Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) have asked the government of India to raise the import duty on sugar to 150 percent to protect the domestic industry. The sugar industry is faced with surplus capacity, free imports and low sugar prices. About 450 sugar manufacturing units are under loss. About 950,000 tonnes of sugar have been imported with a foreign exchange outgo of Rs1,300 crore. Sugar imports are likely to affect 4.5 crore sugarcane farmers. The associations have also expressed disappointment on the delay in implementing the Mahajan Committee Report. (rk)
