British firms are giving practical advice about modern business practices to help the Chinese government reform of state enterprises. In return, British companies are hoping they will benefit from these business relationships and it is a way of demonstrating their commitment to the reform process. Britain has also initiated educational and cultural events between the two countries.

Government incompetence is believed to be causing the steady decline and collapse of the B-share market since the beginning of the Asian economic crisis. B-shares, comprised many of small stocks, were created for foreign investors who would take high risks to make high returns by investing in Chinese companies.
