Article Abstract:
Toto, Japan's biggest maker and seller of sanitary equipment, has scored a marketing success with the washlet. The washlet is a modified toilet that uses flowing water to provide an alternative to toilet paper. Toto's marketing has won a 60% share of Japan's washlet market and helped this product supply 10% of the company's sales. The washlet's popularity shows how an apparently superfluous item can become something that no well-equipped home can be without.
