Israel continued its military attack against Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon during Apr 1996, while US official Warren Christopher attempted to negotiate a cease fire. Syrian Pres Hafez Assad may be a key to the peace process, while Shimon Peres's reelection bid may be hurt by the conflict.

The West should give tentative support to Biljana Plavsic, the current president of the Bosnian Serbs while avoiding making it appear as if she was their puppet. In addition, pressure should be brought to bring former presiden Radovan Kardzic to trial for war crimes.
