Nortel calls on efficiency to revive profit: improved productivity lifts operating margin; "squeezing like crazy"

Article Abstract:

Third-quarter net profit for Canadian telecommunications equipment company Nortel Networks Corp. rose as its recent restructuring improved productivity and prompted new orders. Shares increased 18% to $19.18, and productivity gains nearly doubled operating margin to reach 5%. However, revenue dropped 8% to $2.7 bil.

Alcatel-Lucent hits the ground, prepares to cut products and jobs

Article Abstract:

With its $11.6 billion acquisition of Lucent Technologies Inc. complete, French telecommunications equipment manufacturer Alcatel must now decide which products to discontinue, and which staff to cut . In order for the merger to succeed, the company must save $1.87 billion per year by 2009.

Motorola to buy Symbol Technologies

Article Abstract:

Motorola Inc. of the United States is to purchase Symbol Technologies Inc. also of the United States for $3.9 billion. The mobile phone manufacturer is planning on increasing it's customer base with the acquisition. Motorola Inc. is the second largest cell phone maker worldwide.
