Article Abstract:

A new company named Prereducidos de Vizcaya will be established in July 1998 in order to set up a new factory in Vizcaya. Works amounting to Pta 50,000mn are expected to start in 1999. The factory will produce pre-reduced ('prereducidos') raw material to be used in electric furnaces in steel factories. The new company will be participated by the US investment fund Safeguard (40%), the Norwegian company Kvaerner (20%), EVE (10%), the BBK (10%), Hylsa from Mexico (5%), Mecanica de la Pena (2%), Ingeletric Team (1%), and Oxinote (1%). The rest will be offered to steel companies based in the area. *

According to the Spanish trade union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), in Spain there are 165,000 families in which no partner has any income source. Families where no member of the couple works amount to 800,000. Income perceived by sons feed nearly 130,000 families. Unemployment benefits are said to be paid to only 49.5% of those inscribed in the state employment agency (58.5%, if agriculture special benefit perceivers are accounted). In 50% of the cases such benefits amount to Pta 51,030. *
