Uncertainty resolution and the timing of annuity purchases

Article Abstract:

The role of adverse selection in affecting consumers' saving decisions is investigated to determine why annuity markets are thinning. Using a model where consumers purchase annuities prior to knowledge of their survival probability, it is indicated that no further transactions are undertaken when consumers purchase insurance against their ownsurvival-probability type at a very young age. Under this characterization, theeffects of future introductions of income uncertainty are analyzed. In addition, trade-offs between old age insurance motive and portfolio flexibilityare evaluated.
