One buyer's market

Article Abstract:

The government of Poland is expected send out invitations to tender for 100 attack helicopters worth more than $1 billion. The contract is sure to attract the attention of helicopter manufacturers. The winning bid will affect the future success of Poland's helicopter manufacturer PZL-Swidnik and Eurocopter's Tiger, one of the participants. The US is expected to present one foreign military sales supported bid. Eurocopter has promised to invest in PZL if Poland buys the Tiger.

Israeli industry realigns

Article Abstract:

Elbit Systems' union with El-Op Electro-Optics Industries Ltd in Dec 1999, will begin to have a ripple effect in the defense industry of Israel. The merger of the two firms, which created the biggest private defense contractor in the country, is seen as the prime mover for the merger of the electronic warfare operations of Spectralink, Elisra and Tadiran under the Elisra Group. A further realignment involving state-owned defense firms is expected to be on the horizon.

Acquisition eases NH-90 Nordic bid

Article Abstract:

The EADS group has acquired a 26.8% interest in Patria Industries, Finland's industrial defence group. The purchase will be viewed as enhancing the NH-90's chances of being chosen for the US $2 billion Nordic Standard Helicopter Programme, where Denmark, Finland, Sweden adn NOrway will buy up to 80 helicopters for SAR and coastguard operations, troop transport and anti-submarine warfare. EADS' share in Patria will improve the offset workshare offer on the NH-90.
