One option was to do nothing - to leave the landscape to its own devices as a wilderness

Article Abstract:

The Internationale Bauausstellung Furst-Puckler-Land (IBA), the self-styled biggest landscape project in Europe, aims to transform a run-down region of abandoned mines in the Lasitz, eastern Germany. The IBA seeks sustainable development as it stresses tourism and recreation with many pits becoming lakes and it aims to cultivate new forms of energy like biomass, but it still wants the region's special topography and history to count.
