Out of luck: Olympia is on a losing streak in Sabah

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's Finance Ministry revoked the gaming license of Olympia Industries, and political reasons are suspected. The explanation offered is that state politicians want to deal with local businessmen, who are getting a larger slice of the Sabah state's gaming market. Olympia had favorable connections to the previous party in power. Its current troubles stem from a change of government leadership to the United Malays National Organization. The power to issue gaming licenses was given to the Finance Ministry, which was pressured to revoke Olympia's license.

Sell-off in Sabah; prominent companies line up to bid for troubled utility

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's government plans to reform the electricity board in the state of Sabah, then privatize it in a sale to one or more of the 13 interested firms. The Sabah Electricity Board has almost always lost money, due to poor management and accounting, troubled transmission and distribution facilities that create frequent blackouts, and rates pegged below cost. Technically insolvent, the board received little attention until recently because Sabah has long been governed by an opposition party, and was starved of funds.
