PRODUCTION OF QUALITY SEEDS TO GET MAJOR BOOST

Article Abstract:

The Government of India has planned to give more assistance to production and marketing of superior quality seeds, particularly of cereals and pulses. It has increased the budgetary allocation for seeds to Rs30 crore in 1999-2000 (Rs7.25 crore allocated during 1998- 99). The allocation will finance seed processing and storage- infrastructural facilities, setting up of a national seeds training centre, grants to State Farms Corporation of India for production of foundation and certified seeds and aid to State seed certification organisations. A minikit programme has been launched for rice, wheat and coarse cereal which will introduce latest varieties of seeds and new production technology among the farmers. (um)(psr)

BUMPER 84-LAKH TONNE RABI OILSEEDS CROP LIKELY

Article Abstract:

India is likely to produce a record oilseeds crop of 84.1 lakh tonnes during 1998-99 rabi season (67 lakh tonnes during 1997-98 rabi season). This is due to substantial increase in the production of groundnut from 7.8 lakh tonnes to 11.2 lakh tonnes and mustard seeds from 43.5 lakh tonnes to 58 lakh tonnes. Output of sesame seeds has increased from 1.9 lakh tonnes to 2.1 lakh tonnes while output of safflower seeds has risen from 1.5 lakh tonnes to 2.5 lakh tonnes. Linseed output has increased from 2.9 lakh tonnes to three lakh tonnes. (um)(vr)
