Papa don't preach: Li family rift reflects colony's polarization

Article Abstract:

Liberal lawyer Gladys Li and her conservative father Simon Li stand on opposite sides of a spreading rift in Hong Kong's legal community concerning China's takeover in 1997. Gladys, the new head of the Hong Kong Bar Association, wants Governor Chris Patten to more aggressively push his civil-rights and democracy agenda. Simon, a former Court of Appeal judge and head of the pro-Beijing Preliminary Working Committee's legal-affairs group, think's Patten's reforms are a subversive effort to preserve Britain's influence after 1997.

Article Abstract:

Japan is planning to increase its share of environment-related aid to developing countries. Proposed annual aid expenditures for the period 1993-97 could reach as much as 300 billion yen. For FY 1992 alone, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is contributing 4 billion yen to international agencies involved in environmental protection. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry has an aid budget of 2.7 billion yen for the same period.

Consultant turned politician in Japan

Article Abstract:

Former business consultant Kenichi Ohmae is intent on reforming Japanese politics. His group, Reform of Heisei, has attracted around 50,00 members since its establishment in Nov 1992. Dissatisfied with the country's weak political leadership, Ohmae decided to enter politics and effect change. He envisions a decentralized Japan with a newconstitution, a new national flag and a new power balance.
