Paper dreams of the Parisian future

Article Abstract:

'Le Paris des Utopies' exhibition at the Hotel de Ville, Paris, France, displays works portraying visionary views of Paris. These images include a computer simulation of what Paris would have looked like under Le Corbusier's 1923 scheme, a number of different plans for Les Halles which date from the 1960s and 1970s, science-fiction drawings, and a 1932 vision of 21st century Paris with skyscrapers dwarfing the Eiffel Tower. An overwhelming image from these visionary views is the inclusion of towers and overhead infrastructure.

A romantic era of inspired inventors

Article Abstract:

The Art of the Engineer exhibition is being held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris until 29 September 1997. It is showing Buckminster Fuller's visions of cities, Emilio Perez Pinero's demountable structures and Jean Prouve's lightweight constructions. The more recent projects, such as the Millennium Tower in Tokyo Bay, emphasise the move away from structural achievement, towards aesthetic and green issues. Crowds are drawn to watch the last hours of the Tocawa Bridge, which are shown on a large screen projection.
