Cash call: Haiphong's grand dreams hinge on foreign investment

Article Abstract:

Haiphong was once northern Vietnam's bustling port city and the industrial zone authority is aiming for it to become the new Nomura-Haiphong Industrial Zone. However it will depend on foreign investment to fulfil its ambitions. Nomura will be the zone's main landlord and has already invested $160 million in it. City officials hope that the industrial zone will attract new investors to create jobs and revive the port. The zone has a reliable infrastructure with its own power plant and water treatment facility. However rents are almost as high as in Ho Chi Minh City and Highway 5 which links Haiphong to Hanoi is barely two lanes wide, although there are plans to widen it.

American multinational, Proctor and Gamble Co., has been involved in a joint venture with Vietnamese company, Phuong Dong Soap and Detergent, however, the project has not made a profit because there have been additional costs incurred by upgrading warehouses, advertising and promotions. The venture was expected to be in profit within three years but this has not happened and Proctor and Gamble wants to increase investment to $96 million. Phuong Dong would have to contribute $18 million to retain its 30% share in the venture. It is uncertain whether it would be prepared to do this.

Stage fright: Malaysia takes a more moderate line on censorship

Malaysia's government censors remain ready to stop anything they see as too racy or violent, but criticizing the government and irritating conservative elements no longer leads directly to shut-down. Steady, booming economic growth and technological advances that promise to outrace censorship have played a part in the eased standards. However, talk-show hosts censor themselves, out of fear that going too far could still end a career and possibly jeopardize other commercial activities. Of course, satisfying viewers remains paramount.
