Patient flow-based allocation of inpatient resources: a case study

Article Abstract:

An allocation approach was formulated to address a problem associated with allocating inpatient resources to hospital specialty areas. The time-phased resource allocation approach takes into consideration factors affecting correct level of allocations such as timing and prevention of capacity loss. The approach utilizes a group of computer models to back hospital managerial decision making involving resource allocations in different parts of the hospital.

Capacity planning for intensive care units

Article Abstract:

A simulation model was utilized to illustrate bed capacity planning in intensive care units of hospitals. The model revealed the existence of a non-linear relationship between quantity of beds, mean occupancy level and quantity of patients to be transferred due to unavailability of bed space. An extensive trade off between bed occupancy and the quantity of transfers was noted.
