Article Abstract:

Finnish Nokia, Swedish Ericsson and British Psion who manufactures pocket-sized computers will establish a joint venture called Symbia. Also the American Motorola has signed a Letter of Intent on joining the company. The new Symbia will develop solutions for wireless communication equipment. The aim is for the same machine in future to function better as both a mobile phone and a small computer. The system is intended to become the standard to be used in products by all manufacturers. Nokia and Ericsson own 30% of Symbia and Psion owns the rest. Nokia will invest US$ 50mn to the project.

According to the MD Jaakko Rauramo of Finnish Sanoma-WSOY , the company is looking for growth in Sweden and Russia by acquisitions. For profits Sweden is more interesting, while the Russian markets are large and unsaturated. In theory media companies would be very cheap at the moment in Russia but Sanoma-WSOY has no plans for actions at the moment. Entering the highly competitive Swedish markets will be important but requires careful preparations.
