Patriot games

Article Abstract:

China's leadership is seeking to develop an ideology based on neoconservative, nationalistic concerns. These concerns include a view that crime, corruption and economic inequality are problems, and that Beijing is ignored by provinces. China's neoconservatives seek to involve central government more in markets. President Jiang Zemin is promoting neoconservative policies with his 'spiritual civilization' campaign. Neoconservatism is a shift from a view of economic reform that could be called Dengism, which was set out by China's leader in 1992. Neoconservatives equate Dengism with problems such as corruption.

No regrets?: slowly, authorities begin reassessing Tiananmen

Article Abstract:

With the death of Deng Xiaoping, there is the possibility of rehabilitating Zhao Ziyang, the one time chosen successor, but now under house arrest in Beijing following the Tiananmen Square upheaval. Chinese leaders are addressing many of the Tiananmen demonstrators' grievances such as inflation and widespread corruption. The authorities must reassess the events in Tiananmen Square and rehabilitate those who were condemned, which will mean a partial reversal of verdicts. The army would greatly benefit from a reassessment, after nearly all military leaders asscociated with the crackdown were removed by Jiang.
