Patriot's death adds twist to Diaoyu Island dispute

Article Abstract:

The death of Hong Kong resident David Chan Yuk-cheung in protest against the occupation of Diaoyu Islands by the Japanese has not ignited anti-Japanese feeling among most residents of Hong Kong. Majority believe that Chan should not have attempted the suicidal tactics of jumping into the water while being tied to a moving freighter. They also blame the Taiwanese for not sending a rescue team to save Chan's life. Ironically, it was a Japanese medical team that did so.

Why Hong Kong fights for China's hold of Diaoyus

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong residents are generally in favor of the return to China's territorial jurisdiction of Diaoyus Islands by Japan. The latter has been occupying the formerly uninhabited group of islands despite street protests from Hong Kong citizens during the 1970s. To them, Japan needs to find a political and legal way to return the islands as its continued refusal causes apprehensions among Hong Kong residents about revived Japanese militarism.
