The Indian government has tended to intervene when savings banks have had poblems, but there are signs that private sector mutual funds are starting to make progress in India. There is a high savings rate in India, and financial assets are becoming more important as physical assets become less so. A tax break for mutual fund dividends is making them more attractive and this is especially true for the private sector. Some savers are seeking to boost their returns by taking more risks. Interest rates could be reduced if the government were no longer involved in the savings business.

Article Abstract:

There have been changes to the clasification systems for mutual funds used by some US companies, and these changes reflect the popularity of mutual funds in the US. Funds tend to be less precise in their description in Europe, where there is less of an investment culture. US investors like more detail, but this does not mean that they have more information. Intermediaries like precise parameters since they can use narrow categories to develop portfolios for clients. Some jargon can be arbitrary, and categories can overlap.
