Article Abstract:

A love of architecture and a desire to make people more aware of its role in society were the two major elements which started Timothy Mowl on his writing career as an architectural historian. Mowl studied his craft at Oxford University where he was influenced by his mentor Sir Howard Colvin. An appreciation of all types of architecture is necessary to be able to convincingly discuss the advantages and disadvantages of people's individual works.

Winners of the RSA Art for Architecture Award must show they understand the need for quality and innovative use of materials, light and space, according to project manager for the award Jes Fernie. The award scheme has been running since 1989 and rewards the use of art within architecture. Fernie become involved in the scheme after studying art at college and realising its potential on the streets and in building design.
