Perks of office

Article Abstract:

Thailand's former prime minister, Chatichai Choonhavan, and nine other high level officials in his administration, have been found guilty of corruption. The assets of Chatichai, his personal aide and eight former ministers were ordered seized by a corruption investigating body. The ruling military junta empowered the Assets Investigation Committee to conduct the investigation with the help of the Counter Corruption Commission. However, most Thais fear that the courts will overturn the order and render Thailand's anti-corruption law ineffective.

Amnesty upheld

Article Abstract:

A constitutional tribunal in Thailand has declared that former Prime Minister Suchinda Kraprayoon and other military leaders who were responsible for the massacre of demonstrators in Bangkok were protected by an amnesty. Suchinda granted a general amnesty to the offenders before his resignation. Prime minister Chuan Leekpai has a difficult decision to make especially because he could loose the military's favor and certain members of his own coalition may be convicted for the violence.

Bitter's end: Carlsberg hopes to sell Thailand on milder beer

Article Abstract:

Carlsberg is hoping to take advantage of Thailand's booming beer industry by marketing their beer's high alcohol content, international image and milder flavor. Beer is still expensive in Thailand, but consumption has been rising along with the disposable income of Thais. Steep import taxes have kept foreign beers out of the market but Carlsberg feels the growing economy is ready to buy foreign beer. They hope for a 25% market share by 1995.
