Picking pockets

Article Abstract:

Foreign investors have become useful to the South Korean government as sources of share ramping on the Korea Stock Exchange. The government promotes this practice, by which investors become net buyers of shares, out of a belief that it will boost the stock market and yield political capital. Pres Kim Young Sam's Aug 12, 1993 decree that prohibits anonymity in financial deals after Oct 12 has intensified the promotion of share ramping. Foreigners should consider whether the Korean market is overpriced before they make themselves vulnerable by buying too much.

Time for a new start

Article Abstract:

South Korea's industries are losing their competitive edge in the world market despite the expected increases in the country's Gross National Product in 1992 and a decline in the double-digit inflation rate that hit the country in 1991. The average wage of South Korea's workers continue to rise by an average of 17% each year. Labor is again asking for a 20-25% increase in wages, despite efforts by the government to limit the wage increase to 5%, for 1992. The removal of trade barriers could improve South Korea's competitiveness in the world market.

With bated breath

Article Abstract:

Economic growth in South Korea in 1993 may not be as great as Pres Kim Young Sam hopes. Kim announced an economic stimulus plan in Mar 1993 that includes wage and price controls. This tactic may do little to spur consumer spending. Moreover, the 2.5% growth that the government calculated for the 4th qtr of 1992 was generally believed by economists to be exaggerated. South Korean companies hope that exports to China and the US will alleviate the economic situation.
