The rot spreads: Sendai mayor arrested on bribery charges

Article Abstract:

Sendai, Japan, mayor Toru Ishii and six construction industry executives were arrested on bribery charges related to the awarding of public works contracts in Apr 1992. The arrests are a further blow to the scandal-ridden Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and other parties with LDP ties and may affect Hiroshi Nitsuzuka's possible appointment to LDP secretary-general. However, the case may force a more open system for public works bidding and enable US firms to enter the Japanese market.

Traveller's titles

Article Abstract:

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) vice president Shin Kanemaru is Japan's most powerful politician. Kanemaru's pronouncements are viewed with respect by the public and have forced top politicians belonging to the LDP such as former Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu to resign from their government positions. Kanemaru's success can be credited to the rewards that he bestows on his supporters and the support he has cultivated among Japanese politicians.
