Piles and retaining walls

Article Abstract:

The UK National Building Specification (NBS) association has adopted the 1996 Specification for Piling and Embedding Retaining Walls as part of its contract documentation. The specification is required when deciding which type of retaining wall and pile would be most suitable for different types of environment, ground conditions, structure and cost. Control of ground movement is usually the main factor in determining the use of an embedded wall which, in turn, requires groundwater control to ensure the embedded wall is waterproof.

Caught in the act: The Scheme for Construction Contracts, part of the Construction Act, provides quick and easy dispute resolution

Article Abstract:

The Construction Act has been in operation since May 01 1998, when the Scheme for Construction Contracts was enacted. Architects and designers will have to face the effects of the Construction Act. Contractors will be within their rights to require that issues of quality and workmanship disputed with the architect during a contract, be referred to an adjudicator. An important issue for professional advisors is that of professional indemnity insurance.

Changing contract

Article Abstract:

The Scheme for Construction Contracts is a fundamental part of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 in the UK. The initial draft was widely criticised within the construction industry. Many provisions within the Act are in response to the Latham Report, but proposals regarding trust funds, 10 year build insurance and interest on late payments have not been provided for.
