Planning Glasgow's future

Article Abstract:

Architects, students and engineers attended a weekend seminar entitled Drawing on Glasgow. The aim of the seminar was to consider schemes for the regeneration of part of the city. The delegates studied specified units of land near the city centre, bounded by a motorway and the River Clyde. The development schemes devised by the groups fell into two types, realistic projects and more fantastic concepts. A review panel assessed each scheme and favoured the realistic ideas. The seminar highlighted the common themes of urban regenreation; cohesion, public transport, mixed land use and public space.

Contemporary contrasts with tradition on Glasgow campus

Article Abstract:

The new financial services centre at Glasgow Caledonian University has an innovative design which provides a stimulating and lively working environment. Keppie Architects has juxtaposed traditional and contemporary materials in a way which reflects the forward-looking attitude of the new university. Keppie has given the campus a hard edge by designing formal flat, sandstone elevations to the road. By contrast, the inside edge has a softer, curving glass-glad front opening onto the internal streets of the campus. Offices and circulation routes radiate around the central courtyard.

Converting a chapel into a college coffee shop

Article Abstract:

Architects Roger Joyce and Lynn Davis have converted a chapel into a coffee shop for the South Kent College. The medieval style of the Victorian chapel has been retained but a mezzanine floor and spiral staircase have been added. Lighting plays a key part in creating a relaxed atmosphere and furnishings reflect the gothic architecture but also give a modern aspect to the coffee shop. The team has also refurbished a lecture theatre for the college as part of a planned improvement of teaching and social facilities.
