Article Abstract:

Olivetti has made a bid for Telecom Italia, which has called a stockholders' meeting that has failed to attract enough stockholders for a quorum. Telecom Italia sought permission to acquire a stake of 40% in Telecom Italia Mobile. There is concern about Olivetti's bid which would leave Telecom Italia with high debt levels. There are also doubts as to what Olivetti could contribute in terms of management. A counter-bid could emerge, though the Italian government is not keen on Telecom Italia being acquired by a foreign concern.

A bad telecoms merger

Article Abstract:

The planned merger between Telecom Italia and Deutsche Telekom would create the biggest telecoms company in Europe. Both participants have problems, and defensive mergers tend not to succeed. Telecom Italia lacks a convincing strategy, while Deutsche Telekom has to cut costs and needs to improve its international strategy. Telecoms companies do not necessarily benefit from scale. The proposed merger would probably destroy stockholder value, and the German government should prevent it.
