Poison pen

Article Abstract:

A signed letter alleging homosexual activity by Malaysian Deputy Premier Anwar Ibrahim has received much attention in Malaysia. The allegations seem unlikely, and Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has spoken in defence of his deputy, but political analysts say the letter represents part of the movement to prevent Anwar becoming President of the leading United Malays National Organization (Umno) in the 1999 elections. They believe the letter is part of a campaign from within Umno to create doubts about Anwar's fitness to lead.

Second span

Article Abstract:

Malaysia proposed on July 5 to replace the causeway now linking it to Singapore with a second bridge, in addition to one now under construction. That would allow the Johor Straits to become a major navigation channel, and could make the city of Johor Baru an important port. A consortium of a state-owned agency and two private companies would build the 1 billion ringgit bridge, largely with an eye to related property-development projects. As yet unresolved are Singapore's interest and placating the Renong group.

Name your poison

Article Abstract:

The Japanese maker of Yomeishu wine is suing Chinese competitor Sinma Medical Products in Malaysia over the latter's sales of Chinese Yangmingjiu. The two use the same three Chinese characters though the Romanized names are different, and most Malaysian buyers only read the Chinese. Malaysia accounted for a quarter of Yomeishu's overseas sales in 1994 with $1.5 million, but the less expensive Yangmingjiu is quickly catching up. The court case could have an impact on other markets as well.
