Pol Pot's legacy lives on, thanks to Hun Sen and the world's blind eye on Cambodia's plight

Article Abstract:

Prime Minister Hun Sen's inhumane and violent takeover bid in Cambodia has relived the memories and works of political tyrant Pol Pot. Known primarily as an oppressor of inferior races, Pol Pot ordered the death of thousand citizens in search of a society free of foreign influences. His legacy has been continuously carried out by Hun Sen, whose inefficient economic and political policies have made the country a haven of drug traffickers, murders and corrupt officials.

Poised for an upswing: government measures may boost the economy

Article Abstract:

The Sri Lankan government will adopt more business-friendly economic policies to boost its recovery in 1997. Investor confidence has declined after the government proposed a labor charter that would allow workers to form more labor unions and to strike against alleged abuses by employers. Foreign investment in the stock exchange declined by 20% in 1996. A severe drought has also helped to drag Sri Lanka's economic growth to 3.7% in 1996 from 5.5% in 1997.

Kuala Lumpur unveils second spending plan in two weeks

Article Abstract:

The Malaysian government disclosed a five bil ringgit stimulus package designed to provide cash to firms and consumers without spurring a new speculative attack on the country's currency. However, the first seven bil ringgit package and the new five bil ringgit plan underscore just how concerned the country's officials are about Malaysia's drooping economy.
