Political football

Article Abstract:

Political considerations are preventing completion of a new expressway in Bangkok, Thailand. Bangkok Expressway Co Ltd (BECL), the firm that constructed the toll road, claims that the Thai government as represented by the Expressway and Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (ETA) is violating the contract they signed concerning how the income from tolls would be divided. Interior Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyut and deputy Prime Minister Amnuay Viravan have backed up the ETA's position. The result is that no definite date for opening the badly needed expressway has been agreed to.
