Port in a storm: Hongkong cargo plan sparks four-way fight

Article Abstract:

Hongkong's decision awarding the concession for the planned Terminal 9 is eagerly awaited by four leading operators. Leading the group is Sea Land Corp, the largest US-based investor in the crown colony. Other contenders for the concession are Modern Terminals Ltd, Evergreen Marine Corporation Taiwan Ltd and Hong Kong International Terminals Ltd. Of the companies, only Evergreen has no existing operation in Hongkong. Increasingly, the speculation is that the most diplomatic manner of showing the government's intent to foster competition is to award one berth each to the four handlers.

Shots across the bow: shipping rates look set to rise

Article Abstract:

The Intra-Asia Discussion Agreement (IADA), composed of 28 shipping lines, was organized in late 1991. The group's aim is to analyze Asian shipping rates and to recommend possible increase in freight rates. Factors that contribute to a possible freight rate increase are the non-revenue movement of 20% of international cargoes in 1989, the oversupply of ships with meager amount of freight and the economic downturn in Japan. Freight forwarders have grouped together at various ports to signify their opposition to possible rate increases.

Hongkong telecoms shakeup

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's local telephone market will be opened up in Jan 1993. Potential operators of pay television will be allowed to bid for an unlimited number of telecommunications licenses under the rules set up the government. The decision opening up the telephone market reiterated an earlier government policy on the need for broadcasting networks to have the capability of providing telecommunications services. A number of companies have expressed interest in availing of telecommunications licenses.
