Port in a storm

Article Abstract:

The number of asylum-seekers in Dover, England, has increased, though exact numbers are difficult to ascertain since not all immigrants enter legally. There are from 1,200 to 1,500 immigrants living in Dover, which has a permanent population of 33,000. Kurds account for some 35% of immigrants, Slovakians for 25% and ethnic Albanians accounting for some 10%. Many immigrants are from villages where men traditonally meet in the evening to talk, and they may be perceived by local people as congregating in gangs. Central government aims to speed up the process of deciding on asylum rights, and some asylum seekers have been dispersed elsewhere.

Tirana-on-Thames

Article Abstract:

The number of Albanians living in London, England, has increased, first as a result of the conflict in Kosovo, Serbia, and then as a result of the economic problems of Albania itself. The number of asylum seekers from Kosovo is decreasing as numbers of Albanians from Albania rises. There is a lack of data on the numbers involved, due to the way that statistics are collected. Kosovars tend to have strong family links to aid them, but there are concerns that Albanians from Albania could become involved in petty crime.
