Posting a notice for steel design versatility ...

Article Abstract:

Architects Stride Treglown had to cope with a range of challenges in the design of the Post Office's West of England mail centre at Filton. The main challenges were design issues related to large steel shed architecture. The architects opted for solutions including the placing of more interesting administration offices across the front of the 20,000 square meter building. Other challenges included the proximity to an airport runway which meant the building could not be high, the need to have an open interior to accommodate flexible plans for equipment layout, and the need to serve as a prototype.

Newspaper house style

Article Abstract:

Architect Gerhard Spangenberg used brick, steel and glass for a side extension to the TAZ newspaper publishing building in Berlin, Germany. The front of the building incorporates the most extensive use of the steel-and-glass cladding system, and there are quadrant-shaped steel balconies cantilevered from the front corner of the building. The architect accommodated the client's desire for an extension in which the floors had only lateral access from the floors of the existing building, but an extra conference room floor projects above the height of the old building.

D&B and its alternatives

Article Abstract:

UK architects are increasingly becoming involved in design and build (D&B) programmes, and there is growing diversity of architects' services and procurement methods for such projects. D&B offers the client assurance that the project will be completed within time and within budget, but this must be balanced against design quality. Architects are involved in D&B programmes in various ways: for example, carrying out design work; acting as Employer's Agent; and acting as consultants to maximise project funding.
