Goodwill, lost in translation

Article Abstract:

Official translators and other propagandists in China routinely slant stories to portray the US as a hateful aggressor and China as an innocent victim emerging into its rightful power. This is distorting the perceptions of both leaders and common citizens, paving the way for a dangerous confrontation detrimental to China's own self-interests. The word 'contain' is typically translated as 'throttle,' and 'engage' as a more neutral 'contact.' These reports also depict the US as a waning power, one the Chinese should defeat.

The broken triangle

Article Abstract:

China and the US are preparing for President Jiang Zemin's state visit to Washington, aiming to maintain the continuity of the relationship. The US-China relationship started as a close strategic partnership, but this broke down with the disappearance of the Soviet threat and the uproar over Tiananmen. China has also emerged as a superpower in its own right, with a gradual military build-up, challenging America's presence in the Western Pacific. Such changes in the international context can be managed but not undone.
